Pastor- Rev. John D. Barnette

Reverend John David Barnette was raised in Lincolnton, North Carolina. He grew up attending First Baptist Church of Lincolnton. As a child, he was involved in their children’s program, where he created fond memories at choir camps and festivals, Bible school, and community activities. Each of these activities impacted his life and helped lay the foundation of his faith. As a teenager, John worked at East Lincoln Animal Hospital in Denver and graduated from Lincolnton High School. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and continued working towards his goal of becoming a veterinarian. He soon discovered, however, that God had different plans for him. After much thought and prayer, and with a little encouragement from his wife and family, John applied to and was accepted at Gardner-Webb University’s M. Christopher White Divinity School, where he completed a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Pastoral Care and Counseling. There he learned that pastoral care and counseling in a church setting can be summed up in two words – healthy relationships. As a student, he quickly learned that healthy relationships within the church congregation, and a healthy relationship between the church and the community are vital to maintaining a healthy, thriving and growing church. His emphasis on pastoral care and counseling also allowed him the opportunity to develop the skills needed to counsel and care for individuals dealing with life crises.

John and his wife, Cathy, have been married for ten years and have an eight-old daughter, Charlie. Pastor John enjoys riding horses and he, Cathy and Charlie enjoy traveling and outdoor activities. In the last several years, John has had the pleasure of working with several United Church of Christ churches, granting him the opportunity to immerse himself in the theology and doctrines of the UCC tradition.
